Where strategy, story,
and operations have
to move together.

The hardest moments are usually not just communications problems. They're moments where business model, audience value, executive messaging, media training, product complexity, and internal workflows all have to make sense at the same time. That's where I come in.

01

Narrative strategy & positioning

For organizations at an inflection point: launch, transformation, fundraising, exit, reframe, or institutional change. I help leadership teams clarify what makes the work worth paying attention to and build messaging that holds up across audiences.

02

Executive storytelling & thought leadership

For leaders who need sharper public arguments, stronger bylines, better speeches, clearer talking points, or a more credible external voice. This is high-stakes writing and message development that can carry real institutional or commercial weight.

03

Editorial & business transformation

For media organizations, information businesses, and institutions navigating change. I help connect editorial quality, audience needs, product direction, retention, and business-model shifts so the work becomes more coherent internally and externally.

04

AI, workflow & content systems strategy

For teams figuring out where AI actually belongs in content, research, communications, and institutional workflows. I help make the work more legible, more trustworthy, and more operationally sound.

I work where story,
strategy, and operations collide.

Most organizations do not need a prettier message. They need a clearer understanding of what the work is, why it matters, and how to make it legible to the right people.

I am most useful when the problem is still a little muddy. Sometimes that means the narrative is weak. Sometimes it means the strategy is fine but the operating logic is not visible yet. Sometimes it means the organization is changing faster than its language, workflows, or public explanation can keep up.

My job is to get inside that complexity, identify what actually matters, and help make it clearer. That can show up as positioning, executive narrative, editorial strategy, AI workflow thinking, or a more coherent operating story across the organization.

That perspective comes from working across journalism, business transformation, executive leadership, and hands-on technical systems. I have led editorial organizations, worked through M&A and operating change, built products myself, and spent years translating complex industries for sophisticated audiences.

01

Understand the real problem

I spend real time understanding the product, institution, audience, incentives, and internal tensions before proposing language or structure.

02

Clarify the narrative and operating logic

The goal is not just a better message. It's a clearer relationship between what the organization is doing, why it matters, and how people are expected to understand it.

03

Pressure-test across audiences

The story has to hold up with leadership, staff, readers, customers, boards, and other stakeholders, not just on one stage.

04

Help the work hold up in motion

I work best as an embedded senior resource who can pressure-test and refine things as the situation evolves.

Complexity and nuance,
made clearer.

Media · M&A / transformation

Led acquisition narrative and operating transition in a down market

As President and Editor-in-Chief of Compliance Week, I helped shape the company's acquisition narrative by connecting audience metrics, operational logic, and strategic positioning into a credible case during a difficult market for media deals.

Successful sale in a down market. $500K+ in costs reduced without quality loss. Member retention rose above 90% through the transition.

Policy · Research communications

Turned a global research study into international news coverage

An industry association commissioned a global survey of nearly 13,000 people across multiple countries. I helped shape the findings into a report that translated proprietary data and academic research into a clear, media-ready narrative.

The survey was covered in over 100 original articles across more than a dozen countries during a highly competitive news cycle.

Healthcare · Executive thought leadership

Produced publication-ready executive thought leadership in a complex technical category

A PR firm brought me in to produce a byline for a technology executive in a clinically and technically complex field. The work required deep reporting, synthesis, and editorial judgment strong enough to clear a major publication's bar.

Published to a global audience in a high profile business publication.

Technology · Exit prep

Built narrative framework for a company preparing for exit or capital-markets scrutiny

I worked with a C-suite team to clarify how the company should explain itself to potential acquirers or public-market audiences, turning broad ambition into a pressure-tested narrative framework.

A coherent strategic narrative ready for investor-facing conversations before the process intensified.

I'm Ian Sherr, a fractional editorial, communications, and AI strategy executive.

My background spans editorial leadership, business transformation, M&A, executive storytelling, and hands-on work around AI and workflow systems. I've reported for The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Reuters, led major newsroom operations at CNET and CBS, and served as President and Editor-in-Chief of Compliance Week, where I helped guide the business through acquisition and operational change.

Today I work with founders, leadership teams, media organizations, and institutions that need help making complex work clearer, more coherent, and easier to act on, whether that means executive narrative, editorial strategy, AI workflow thinking, business-model change, or higher-stakes communications.

I also build. Through Vostego, NewsCompass and other internal prototypes, I've worked directly with product, data, infrastructure, and AI systems, which means I can understand technical work from the inside, not just message it from the outside.
